70D Business Coupe Quarter Window Install |
|
|
Back in the day, you could order a 57 Ford sedan with no back seat. This model was called a "Business Coupe" (70D) and was used primarily by on-the-road sales people to carry stock and samples. The back seat delete also deleted the quarter window cranks, so the windows were permanently sealed. These coupes were sought after by racers because of their light weight and are now extremely rare. I love the look of the sealed quarter windows and as luck would have it John Gambill makes a kit to convert regular 2 door sedan quarter windows to the sealed style. *UPDATE
- Don't even begin to contemplate this swap unless you are very strong
willed... The original Ford gaskets are unavailable. Your only
choice is to purchase repop gaskets from Dennis Carpenter.
Their gaskets are not even close to being correct. They are not
molded like the originals and the gap for the glass is too thick.
In order to make them work, you need to purchase custom made thicker
glass. You also will need to glue them in place. After
three sets of gaskets at $50 each and two sizes of glass, I was able to
make them work by epoxying the inside of the gasket to the glass.

The kit comes with this stainless steel support brace and screws. The brace fits under the gasket and helps hold the window glass in position. |

The kit also comes with a template so you can have your glass re-cut to fit the gasket. I bought new glass anyway, so I had the glass made to fit his pattern. The gasket is available from Dennis Carpenter (see above). In this picture you can see the string I used to install the glass and the gasket in one piece. |

Here's what the finished widows look like. Nice finished look and no leaks. I sealed the window with silicone sealer. After this photo was taken, I had to tear everything out and redo it three more times. (see above). |
